Optical flywheels with attosecond jitter

It has been known for some time that the steady-state pulse propagating inside a mode-locked laser is the optical equivalent of a mechanical flywheel. By measuring the timing error spectrum between phase-locked optical pulse trains emitted from two nearly identical 10 fs Ti:sapphire lasers, we demonstrate a record low integrated timing error of less than 13 as, measured from d.c. to the Nyquist...

Independently tunable 1.3 W femtosecond Ti:sapphire lasers passively synchronized with attosecond timing jitter and ultrahigh robustness.

A stable passively synchronized femtosecond laser has been realized by coupling two 1.3 W mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers with a Kerr medium. An ultralong tolerance of 10 microm for the cavity length mismatch and a timing jitter of less than 0.4 fs were obtained. The relative carrier-envelope phase slip was directly observed by measuring the heterodyne output between the two lasers.

Optical circular deflector with attosecond resolution for ultrashort electron beam

A novel method using high-power laser as a circular deflector is proposed for the measurement of femtosecond (fs) and sub-fs electron beam. In the scheme, the electron beam interacts with a laser pulse operating in a radially polarized doughnut mode (TEM01 ) in a helical undulator, generating angular kicks along the beam in two directions at the same time. The phase difference between the two a...

Photon Jitter Mitigation for the Optical Channel

We consider a pulse-position-modulated (PPM) optical communications channel where photon arrival times are offset by a random jitter. This models jitter introduced by timing synchronization or detector delay, which is a significant degradation for very short slot widths. We derive the symbol likelihoods in the presence of inter-slot interference (ITI) as well as a number of practical approximat...

Guided wave optics in periodically poled KTP: quadratic nonlinearity and prospects for attosecond jitter characterization.

For the first time to our knowledge, continuous nonsegmented channel waveguides in periodically poled KTiOPO(4) with guided orthogonal polarizations are used to demonstrate type II background-free second harmonic generation in the telecom band with 1.6%/(W cm(2)) normalized conversion efficiency. This constitutes a 90-fold improvement in aggregate conversion efficiency over its free space count...
